Japan's tiny fishing villages hold a secret. (Minami, Japan)
Minami is a small fishing town on Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's four main islands. I learned a lot from my time there: what an ocean nostril looks like, what makes a delicious meal (pretty much everything from the sea), and the secret to living a meaningful life.

I am so glad to find your family channel! You guys are great and giving me the courage to start my homestead journey
When I saw the Airbnb listing, I absolutely loved that they included the vintage CRT TV and the Famicom (NES). A really nice touch. It's almost like getting to stay in a 90's Japanese time capsule.
The copper in the treated lumber is not the problem. It’s the chromium and the arsenic that causes the problems which is why most people are getting away from using this type of treated lumber.

you should do polyculture instead like mike hoag, hes you tube chanel talk about not taking care of your garden
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out!
Greetings, I was wondering how you thought this design would work in Maine, or how this design would take snow loads?
We've had a foot of snow on top of it with no noticable issues whatsoever. It's helpful to shovel it off if it's going to be any more than that.
good information man-. nicely done . thanks
Thanks for watching!
lol just to throw it all away. Lazy rich losers that play dress-up with other peoples livelihood.
Are you back in Canada from Japan?
yeah, skating in my 30s is a different experience for sure and much more care needs to be taken cus im not falling and getting up 100x a day anymore lol
For definitely gotta take things easier, stakes are a bit higher if I'm going to be out with an injury for a while as well. 😂 But it's still so fun :D
yes, i built my garden for zero dollars with reused, highly bioactive amended soil! neighbors get upset my garden is doing so much better than theirs and are stumped and ask " what soil do you use" thinking its one thing i paid for making my garden succesful when its a complete picture. i tell them our water ph is off out of the tap and needs adjusted and still see them watering right out of the hose...
its a whole picture. also use old tent poles for support and old ass pots and resused cloth pots and old litter bins lol
Nice work! Yeah I find my own soil does better now that I've built it up over the years with sheet mulching, animal bedding, humanure, and tons of compost. The black stuff from the garden store looks nice but is just DEAD 😂 Respect your dedication to the free stuff 💪🏻💪🏻
Keren sobat ❤ sukses selalu, salam kenal 🙏🙏
❤️❤️❤️
I loose money because my girls are WAY too spoiled 😂
Haha it's hard when you do it for love and not money 👌😅
I think it broke
I was worried the eggs were going to break too, but it lowers them very gently. They all made it home in one piece!
Hey! How did those chickens do?! I’m thinking on getting a few!
The mistral gris were great! They take a bit longer to reach harvesting weight than say cornish cross, but only an additional week or two. They all seemed healthy and happy, with a finished processed weight between 4-6lbs. Taste good too!
$7 !? 😂 🚫
Exchange rate 😉
@@Slowsteading Hardly "financial minimalism" though. Ouch!
@@AdirondackRubyit’s pretty much the cost in Canada, every small scale farmer I know around here sells these for 7 bucks.
@Stylvestre That'd be $5 in the US...and I bet some people are trying to get that much...but I live rural and my chicken owning neighbors are all at $3. Guess I'm just lucky.
@@AdirondackRuby family's gotta eat 😂 I've kept my own chickens for eggs too, and it sure ain't free. $3 is great though, definitely support those neighbors!
The way these rightwing nutjobs in the comments are finding out you’re not exactly like them just because you had a homestead 💀 I’m personally glad everything worked out for you and your family! I only keep 4 egg-laying chickens and two garden beds but I enjoy it as a hobby :)
Didn't you have a wife and kids?
Still do! 😂😂 They didn't join me this particular side trip 👌
Thanks for the video, it's a nice build. How do you keep the bears from obliterating it? We live in a suburban neighbourhood with no forest nearby, and we still can't keep them from destroying everything. Has anyone had success with a coop that has spikes all over it? I'm trying to come up with a design like that, except I'd want the nails covered when the kids are around. Any ideas?
Strong electric fence around it. Can also use electric pads around but electricity is the best way to combat bears
Thanks for watching! I'm grateful that bears aren't a concern in our area, but that sounds like a tough situation for you! The electric fence idea another commenter mentioned sounds like a good starting point, I wonder if there are any other ideas out there 🤔

😂😂😂
I did the exact same thing Tuesday night!
You know how to have a good time 👏👏👏
I want free stuff now!!!
Go get it, it's all out there waiting for you!!
Disturbing video. Sad how they cook the shellfish while it's still living (and moving). Couldn't be bothered to put them out of their misery first. And the magnificent sea turtle stuck in the grimy bathtub? That's not a research project, it's a tourist trap zoo.
did you end up putting hardware cloth to cover the window? thats the only thing i would definitely do for this one. really love the whole thing. will definitely be drawing inspiration from it
Thanks, glad you liked it! I added nest boxes behind the window so there is easy access to eggs 👌 I documented that process in another video 😊
We are not CHEAP - we are FRUGAL ... big difference! cheap you get cheap, unnecessary stuff, frugal you get quality stuff that you NEED for free or at a low cost.
glad i watched and seen the golf ball. i had never knew about this trick! thanks for the solid videos!!
Haha yeah it's a simple little trick to help train the girls! Most farm stores sell plastic or stone eggs for this purpose, but an old golf ball is much more free 😅
Love the work, but that is not $0 if you dont have the sanding machine and the coat xd
Ha thanks! But what if you do? 🤔
That never happens here 😂
Haha maybe it's a cultural thing 😂
You missed a spot 😂, keep going
😂😂😂 time to get the ole brush out for a second coat 🤦🏻♂️
Beautiful video, thank you.
Thanks for watching! I've been loving your series on your kominka process as well 🙏
@@Slowsteading thank you! :)
👏🏼
Thank you!
I grabbed a free ladder.. leg was a touch bent.. with my axe carved out a rough 2x4 screwed it to the leg it was stronger than the other three legs so I added a piece to each leg lol. I live off grid in the Canadian bush in a log cabin on solar. I spend less than 200$ a month and that includes my cell phone hahaha. Everything is free.. you just have to know how to make it find or grow it..
Sounds like paradise, complete with a sturdy ole ladder 👌
The song 😂😂😂
Can't not eat peaches without singing that song in my head 😂

This is a lovely episode!
Thanks Jeremy! It's a beautiful town!
What do you think about the Loggerhead sea turtles at 4:27, do those tanks looks big enough?
No. No it's not. See also: the dolphin pools in my small town on Shikoku that were crushingly small. Japan and "animal welfare" are not exactly synonymous.
Awsome.i wish I had the capital to be able to just pick up and start somewhere different.but impossible to do when you cant even afford to eat
I agree that food/housing are very unaffordable these days. Which is why the idea of living in a country that hasn't experienced such rapid inflation in the cost of basic needs like housing, food, medical, is so appealing. Cost of living in the USA and other western countries is so extremely high, and what do you even get in return?
you're a great story teller. please keep making videos. i'm looking forward to visiting japan next summer.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I hope you enjoy your time in Japan, it is a beautiful country 🥰
Our first coop and run were built from an older wood deck we wanted to replace with crushed shell...it wound up looking just like a log cabin when finished...so ran with the theme, it is Fort Henagin, where all the redheads (New Hampshire reds) and brahmas sleep. Our second was gifted by someone who bought it, and decided not to do chickens after all...added a nice outside run area painted it teal...and it is where the Easter eggers live...Our final is about to be finished today, Had to have a LOt more outside space (for the Polish hens and they dont free range well) ..it is already named Poland..Ours all need to be covered in double layers of shade cloth as we are southwest Florida...I think the afternoon sun is about a mile above our yard......be careful...you will outgrow it in no time.. great job especially for a first timer !!
Thanks so much for watching and sharing your coop experience! I love how you've re-used and re-purposed for your coops, it really keeps the costs down (and keep things interesting). I know what you mean, we had already added an a-frame for the meat birds and a massive covered run for the rabbits, not to mention the quail... 😂😂 Do you have any advice for people looking to expand their coop space? Best of luck finishing your Poland project!
This video is a gift. I feel better just watching it. I suddenly want to buy an abandoned house on a small island in the Inland Sea. I hope you keep making videos like this. You capture what travel (and living) in Japan is all about.
Ha thanks! The cohesion is so strong amongst the residents here (it has to be, for survival) so you'd really want to integrate with the community. We did in fact run into one old guy who voiced his displeasure at the sight of a bunch of gaijin walking around his town. Fair enough, I mean it makes sense to be wary of outsiders. But I guess grumpy people are going to exist everywhere 😂
Where'd that whole split in the middle go?? Guaranteed you spent at least a hundred for that new wood slab
Haha I just sanded it out 🤷🏻♂️ I got better things to do than lie about DIY projects online 😂
